Your bags are packed. The taxi to the airport is five minutes away. You press the button on your garage door opener, and… nothing. The door didn’t move. You’re trapped. That small “pop” you heard from the garage last week wasn’t harmless. It was the sound of the single most important component of your garage door failing: the spring.
As Canadians plan for November travel, the last thing anyone needs is a malfunctioning garage door. The springs are the number one cause of garage door failure. Here are the quick, visual checks you can perform to assess the health of your springs before they break.
The Heart of Your Garage Door: The Spring System

You likely have one of two systems:
- Torsion Springs: The most common type in Canada. A large, heavy-duty spring (or pair) mounted on a metal shaft directly above the door opening.
- Extension Springs: An older system. Two smaller springs running parallel to the horizontal tracks, on either side of the door.
Safe Visual Checks for Your Springs
These checks are purely observational. At no time should you touch, tighten, or attempt to adjust the springs, cables, or the red-painted brackets they are attached to.
Check 1: The Torsion Spring Gap
This is the most obvious sign of a failure. Look at your torsion spring (above the door). When it breaks, the high-tension coil snaps, and the spring separates into two pieces. You will see a very clear 2-3 inch gap in the spring where there wasn’t one before. If you see this gap, the spring is broken.
Check 2: Look for Rust and Corrosion
Rust is the primary enemy of a spring. It weakens the steel and creates friction between the coils. Instead of coiling and uncoiling smoothly, a rusty spring will grind and bind, which dramatically increases the stress. As salt and slush drip from your car, the humid, salty air accelerates this corrosion. Look for any visible orange or brown rust spots.
Check 3: Inspect Extension Spring Coils
For extension springs, look closely at the coils. Do they look uniform, or are some of them visibly stretched out, deformed, or separated? This is a sign of metal fatigue. A spring in this condition has lost its lifting power and is on the verge of snapping.
Check 4: Check for Safety Cables (Extension Springs Only)
If you have extension springs, you must have a safety cable running through the middle of each one. When an extension spring breaks, it snaps with incredible force, becoming a dangerous projectile. The safety cable is designed to contain the broken spring. If you do not see a cable, call a professional immediately.
The Two Most Important Diagnostic Tests

Test 1: Watch and Listen. Stand back and watch the door move. Is it jerky or crooked? A lopsided door often signals a broken spring or cable. Also, recall any loud, sudden “BANG” from your garage in the past weeks; that was likely a spring snapping.
Test 2: The Critical Balance Test. First, close the door. Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the opener. Manually lift the door to your waist and let go.
- A healthy door will stay put.
- If it slams down, the springs are weak or broken.
- If it flies up, the springs are over-tensioned.
If your door fails this balance test, it requires professional service.
Why Professional Spring Service is Non-Negotiable
These visual checks and the balance test are diagnostic. The repair, however, is not a home project. This is where professional expertise is the only safe solution.
Preventive maintenance is the work required to maintain the physical integrity or usefulness of a real property facility, including work to maintain, repair, restore… or alter facilities or components, to a condition that the facility or component may be used effectively for its designated or intended purpose (Schreiber et al., 2020).
A pro restores the entire system to a safe, balanced condition. Spring replacement is extremely dangerous; the lethal tension requires special tools and training. A technician also ensures precision: they calculate the exact spring for your door’s specific weight, as the wrong one will destroy your opener. They can also find the root cause of the break, determining if a full garage door replacement in Ottawa is a smarter investment than repairing multiple failing parts.
Don’t Let a Broken Spring Ground Your Travel Plans
Checking your door for balance and obvious visual flaws before you leave for a trip is a smart way to prevent a last-minute disaster. If your door fails the balance test or shows any signs of rust, a crooked lift, or a visible break, don’t wait for it to fail completely.
